Things here are okay. I finished the policy document I was writing and now I don't really know what else to do. I told my boss I had nothing else to do, but he hasn't gotten back to me yet. Ah well. I've exhausted all the seemingly-legitimate things that I can do, so here I am on LJ. Heh.

Yesterday have_inner_lady and her wondermous hubby and son came over. have_inner_lady stayed at the house while the others went off to the park, even though it was a sort of drizzly day. Though the theory was that we were going to unpack boxes, have_inner_lady and I sat down on the couch and did some catching up. We hadn't seen each other in quite a while (save the three minutes I saw of her at our reunion last month, but that hardly counts). Frankly, it was much better for me to be able to spend some quality time with have_inner_lady than to unpack. As it happened, I had stayed up most of Saturday night unpacking random boxes, so I wasn't in terrible shape in terms of the unpacking progress. That was a good thing.

The guys came back eventually and entertained themselves while have_inner_lady tried to snake out my drain, but it was easier said than done. She had to pull the elbow joint off the plumbing and go in from there, which was all fine and dandy except that even that didn't help. She pulled a lot of gunk out of the pipe, but it didn't fix the clog. Even Jesse tried, and he got the snake in about 6 feet, but that still didn't help. So all kinds of disgusting gunk came out of the pipe, but still, no draining. Sigh. Needless to say, I believe that I am in need of a professional at this point. But at least I can say that I know I'm not just wasting money on something I could do myself.

Eventually we realized that it was getting close to lunch time, so we decided to do some unpacking so that I could find a couple of pans that I would need in order to cook some veggie tacos. Well, have_inner_lady is way cooler than me. SHE unpacked my stuff while I did the cooking. Frankly, I think she got a raw deal on that one! But that's okay, it worked out just fine.

After lunch, have_inner_lady's son fell asleep after a bit, and we continued to chat and sort of unpack. Eventually we called dallendoug and he came over with another long-lost friend. It was nifty. The five of us hung out for a while and I got a few ideas of how to fix some things in the house, and I got a few really good pictures (also some great pictures of have_inner_lady and her family earlier in the day). Now I just have to find the cable that I use to download the pictures from the camera onto my laptop. Sigh. I'll figure that one out somehow or another. I'm sure it's in a box somewhere... That may be a problem for another day.

Anyway, after a while, have_inner_lady and dallendoug and co. went out to dinner. I said goodbye and stayed home. caryabend and psu_jedi came over and we went out to dinner at Max's so that I could have meat before the Nine Days started (no meat during the nine days except on shabbos).

It was a very long day, but a very satisfying day. I got to see lots of people while barely leaving the comfort of my own home. I had good food and good company all day. The weather was perfect. The cats didn't misbehave TOO much. All in all, it was great. :)

In other completely unrelated news, I'm a bit worried about my father. His health is really declining and every time I talk to him he is completely exhausted...more so every time. I wish there were something I could do for him, though I know there really isn't anything. I just wish there were magic fairy-dust I could sprinkle over his head that would make him fly. Er. Wrong fairy tale. Anyway, I just wish I could make it all better.

And now, back to attempting productivity, even though there's not a lot to be done.

Current Mood: accomplished accomplished

I'm sorry to hear about your dad. I worry about mine (I have two) and my father-in-law. They're all getting up there.

I'm sure he'll be fine. I just wish that he could enjoy himself more. It's hard to do when he feels cruddy. He's still fairly young and it's not fair that he can't have the energy he deserves to enjoy himself. He's only 55.

he has diabetes insipidus which is a pituitary issue. Actually, his pituitary gland collapsed a couple years ago, so he doesn't have one at all anymore. On top of that, he's probably got chronic fatigue (maybe because of that? all the problems sort of started at once). His energy levels are nil. And he pushes himself during the week to the point that he collapses (literally) all weekend. There's nothing imminently wrong with him. He's just not optimal either.

I know the feeling on your father. Mine is in his 80s—we still talk weekly—and I'm seeing him slowly decline. Not as much health-wise (he has COPD), but he's not able to keep up with discussions as much if you talk to fast, and he has more bouts of depression. It's really sad to see a parent start to decline, and yet you dread the day they go.

(I also know your comments on productivity. I have those days as well, and they are much more frustrating than the days one has too much to do).

I need to pipe up that in NO way did I get the raw end of the deal. You're so great to be around that I'd drive two hours to visit you just about any day. And I think it's kinda fun to unpack kitchens, especially when it comes with a mini-education.

wishing your father health

You should know that when my son woke up this morning, one of the first things out of his mouth was, "I'm a cat! I am very scared. ... I love Pipsqueak, is a very scared cat."

(accompanied appropriately by catlike snuggles and meauling sounds)

I love that boy so freaking much...!

call roter rooter. we just had plumbing hell. our drain was clogged and roter rooter came and unclogged it. 3 days later it was clogged again and they came again and unclogged it correctly and found an old snake from someone who lived in our house before that was stuck in our pipe along with washing machine lint and toilet paper. yuck.

be careful with plumbing

I called our handyman. I'm going to let him deal with it first and see how far that gets me. I am always careful with plumbing and electricity.
