Well, turned out to be a good thing that I dropped everything to see her, because I got to look at three houses that really did all seem like they would work well for us. One was a two bedroom with a riculous amount of room for expansion. Another was a three bedroom completely out of our range. They had just re-done EVERYTHING, right down to every appliance in the kitchen (the oven/range was worth at least $1500... who knows what the stainless steel kitchenaid fridge was worth!). So no way could we have afforded it, but it was really neat.
And the third (which was actually the first house I looked at) is remarkably similar to the last house that we bid on, but with a good deal more space, nice re-finished hardwood floors, a bigger kitchen (which still needs to be re-done, but not as desperately as the other), a full finished basement (again, outdated and needs to be re-done, but at least we don't have to start from scratch), and a walk up attic (not finished, but easy enough to finish). Still no A/C, but very easy to put in. A nice fireplace. An enclosed sunroom. It's really a beautiful old house, with incredible landscaping and a lot of charm. Oh, and did I mention that it's FOUR BLOCKS FROM OUR SHUL???? That's right folks, FOUR BLOCKS! Rock on. We have good friends one and a half blocks one direction down the street, good friends two blocks the other direction, we're three blocks away from Seth's best man and his wife, 7 blocks from our friend Ellen. Really, what more could we ask for? It's fantastic.
So wish us luck. Contracts are being presented tomorrow afternoon. We've made a strong offer, our strongest possible offer, in fact. So I hope we get it!!
