I started inducing lactation about 4 months before she was born. Her biological mom rented a hospital breast pump and froze milk for us. Another friend of mine had just given birth and was producing enough milk to feed a small country, so between the three of us we managed to keep Rivka on BM for over a full year. She nursed from me for about 3 and 1/2 months, but she got her teeth in early and went on a nursing strike because her little gums were so sore. She didn't want to have anything to do with nursing from then on, which made me very sad because I was determined to be able to nurse as long as my body would let me. I am SO grateful to my friends who donated their milk and helped out with us. We really DID have a village raise a child! I'm really happy about all of the extra antibodies she got, because ka'h she's hardly ever sick, and when she is it's a very light case and she bounces back quickly.

That is so awesome! You are truly Supermom -- I have been told that inducing lactation involves a tremendous amount of work, and I know I did not enjoy the pump while I was using it. (My son had some difficulties nursing in the first few weeks -- he was too sleepy to eat.)

Really, induced lactation is NOTHING compared to infertility treatments. It is a lot of work and dedication, though.

After 20 years of infertility, I was just happy that my body was doing *something* right! I had felt like such a failure all those years, so being able to provide nourishment for my daughter was an amazing feeling. I only wish I could have done it longer, but I thank G-d that I had the opportunity when I did.
