State of the Julian Address
It's been far too long since I've posted new pictures of Julian, so I've just posted a whole bunch of fun ones. Julian has been doing really well lately... here are the highlights:
  • Julian will be three next month and he's definitely starting to grow up in unexpected ways. He's well over three feet tall and about 35 or 36 pounds (we're not really clear on that one, but we'll know for sure next month). He's wearing 4Ts for the most part, though he's so skinny, he needs 3T pants even though they're short on him. (I have no doubt that this is short lived and that he will soon be comfortably in 4Ts for everything)
  • Julian's language skills are unbelievable! He holds entire conversations now and has strong opinions about just about everything. He knows what he wants to eat, drink, wear, play with, and so on. Sometimes he doesn't know exactly what he wants, but he ALWAYS knows what he doesn't want! He speaks in very mature sentences now, and it's always surprising when he says, "Good morning, Eema, may I please have some milk, please?" or "Hey! Look over there at all the trains, I found them!" It's hard to believe that it was just a year ago that we were wondering when he was going to start talking with words that we could understand regularly. Now he is a constant chatterbox, with a running-commentary for every activity. Sometimes it's frustrating (e.g. when we're trying to concentrate), but mostly it's endearing.
  • Julian also has an incredible imagination. While playing with his train set tonight, he was talking to imaginary passengers and telling them when it was time for them to get off at their stop (the train set has neither miniature passengers nor stations on it, so he makes them up). I've also heard him talking to imaginary friends a few times. This is pretty interesting, because I had a very specific imaginary friend when I was his age, so it's fun to watch Julian start to find his own imaginary playmates. It's also, apparently, a very important developmental milestone to have so much imaginary play, so he's right on target.
  • He also has a terrific memory. We say the Pixar movie, Cars, twice with Julian and he remembers scenes from the movie by heart and acts them out with his toy cars (from the cars movie). He also is occasionally caught putting his racecars in "time out." This is particularly funny, because he's actually starting to outgrow his "time outs." Mostly he knows exactly how far to push our buttons until RIGHT before we send him into a time out. So he walks that line a lot, but rarely puts more than a toe across it anymore. Except, you know, when he does.
  • Julian doesn't just have imaginary playmates... he's got lots of little friends as well. This summer we have been sharing a nanny with another family, and he plays every day with Stephen, David, Meira, and Sarah. Sometimes on Sundays, he has a playdate with his friend Avi who is just a little bit younger than him. On Saturday mornings, we go to a friend's house and he plays with Kalaiv. His favorite, pal, though, remains Aaron, who just turned 8. Aaron makes a great "big brother" for Julian and he takes care to play gently with Julian and always looks out for him when they are out at the park, or at school.
  • Julian will be returning to the Melvin J. Berman Hebrew Academy this year and joining the THREE (!) year old preschool program. I know that he will have a great time, because he has been asking all summer when he gets to go back to school. Little does he know!
  • He is obsessed with cars, trucks, construction equipment and trains. He can't get enough of them and plays with them, goes to sleep with them, brings them in the car with him, and keeps them next to him at the dinner table. He never fails to find the cars in other kids' toy piles and will turn down almost any toy for a good bulldozer or tow truck. He occasionally agrees to leave his cars a comfortable distance away so that he can play with play-doh, markers, or well, no, that's about it. He also loves to read. He has lots of favorite stories, but is generally happy with any colorful book. Bob the Builder and Thomas the Tank Engine remain steady favorites as well (I mean, what's not to love? Construction Equipment and Trains! What more can a two year old boy ask for?)
Anyway, I know you're all hoping I stop blathering long enough to give you the URL of the latest photos, so here it is: http://homepage.mac.com/karen_cohen/Julian/PhotoAlbum52.html

Current Mood: happy happy

I can't get over how fun an almost-three year old can be. When we got him at 13 months we thought, "boy, this is the GREATEST age. It doesn't get better than this!" HAH!

What a handsome little guy! He seems so incredibly happy with in your home. He's obviously thriving.
estherchaya From: estherchaya Date: August 18th, 2006 10:45 am (UTC) (Link)
I'm not sure if he's thriving because of us, or in spite of us. But he's incredibly resilient, this little one.

He's very fun and he loves people and kids, so no doubt they'd get along beautifully.

Is he trained? Can he begin wearing tzitzis l'kavod this important birthday?
estherchaya From: estherchaya Date: August 7th, 2006 09:14 pm (UTC) (Link)
No, he's not, though he's starting to be consistently interested in the potty, which is a step in the right direction. He still can't anticipate when he needs to use it.

I know you don't know me, but I was referred to this post by a friend of yours. I just wanted to say that your little boy sounds exactly like mine. So very cute and smart.
