French Luxury Store Apologizes to Oprah
By Associated Press
Thu Jun 23, 4:41 PM

PARIS - The luxury store Hermes has apologized to Oprah Winfrey for turning her away from one of its Paris boutiques last week, saying it was closed for a public relations event when she came knocking.

The talk-show host and "an entourage" unsuccessfully tried to enter an Hermes boutique on Paris' posh Rue du Faubourg Saint-Honore at 6:45 p.m. on June 14, Hermes said in a statement.

"People were in the store and they were shopping. Oprah was at the door and she was not allowed into the store," Gayle King, a friend of Winfrey who witnessed the incident, told syndicated TV show "Entertainment Tonight." "Oprah describes it herself as `one of the most humiliating moments of her life.'"

King said it's unlikely that Winfrey will shop there again. "She's really OK. Her position is, `I will shop where people appreciate my business, and I don't believe that any longer includes Hermes,'" King said.

The store's normal closing time is 6:30 p.m., although high-end shops are known to make exceptions for celebrities. On that particular night, however, "a private public relations event was being prepared inside," the statement from Hermes said.

"Hermes regrets not having been able to welcome Madame Oprah Winfrey and the people accompanying her to give them all the attention and service that Hermes is committed to giving each of its clients in the world," said the statement, released Tuesday. "Hermes expresses its sincere regrets for any misunderstanding that these circumstances could have caused."

If the "most humiliating moment" of your life is being turned away by a luxury store after its normal closing time, then you've got a pretty fucking good life so sit down, shut up, and how dare you feel the need to "address the press" about this so-called "issue." Grow the hell up. I think I just lost a lot of respect for Oprah. Seriously, how many people on my friends list could even afford to go into the Hermes store in Paris, let alone get offended if they won't let me in after the store has officially CLOSED!

I have Hermes scarf from the 1980's. Some weirdo gave it to me as a bas mitzvah gift.

okay, but that's a scarf. And would it be the most humiliating moment of your life if Hermes didn't allow you in the store </i>after they had closed?</i>

I mean, seriously, it's unreal. You're a pretty lucky lady if that's the most humiliating thing that's ever happened to you. How dare they not treat her like the goddess that she thinks she is!?

I have to agree with you, in the scope of humiliation, if that's the worst thing that has embarrassed you, you do indeed live a charmed life.

She is so "important" in her own eyes I think it skewed her reaction to this one event, which really isn't significant.

it's disgusting. That she can be humiliated by being treated like "normal" real people (not even treated as sub-human, just treated the way any normal paying customer would be treated) shows a true lack of perspective.

my mom is really tired of oprah. somebody keeps giving her a oprah magazine subscription every year and she's tired of it b/c it's full of expensive clothes that she'll never buy. like, "affordable" and "everyday" pants for $300.

she used to be good at relating to "real" people. But I think she's lost every sense of perspective.

My most vivid memory of Oprah Winfrey is of her role in _The Color Purple_. She did a good job there playing someone who understood *real* humiliation. Maybe she ought to revisit the part, for some perspective.

I was thinking of that exactly.

That is a story absolutely worth me saying "oh, wah, wah." Of course, you loose the "dripping with sarcasm" voice when it's translated into text. Oprah used to be cool, and her show used to be about real life. Now it's "I've got lots of money so I'm giving the audience my favourite toenail clippers while chatting to my famous friends about what they had for breakfast."

That is so out of touch with reality that it's baffling. Does she really not get it that stores close and then omg you can't get in? IT's some sort of personal insult that store employees want to GO HOME?

If that's her most embarrassing moment she needs to get a real life.
