Oh I remember now! - Karen's Musings

Oh I remember now!
I remember what I was going to write about. I just had another satsfying conversation. This time with my boss.
Me: Sooooooo, I feel like [my company name] wants to pay for me to go to a CISSP Course.
    Boss: No problem.
    Me: Uh.... really?
Boss: Send me the stuff. We'll make it happen.

**Boggle** I really expected that to be a much longer, more drawn out, less satisfying conversation.

Now, if we get the course arranged for the weekend before ACSAC... (rubs hands).

Not gonna happen. I'm looking at a week-long CISSP course ('cause I can...and 'cause if the company is going to pay for it, why not??). No way are they going to let me miss more work for ACSAC. If I lose the battle on the CISSP Course, I'll be able to win for ACSAC, but I won't get both. Since CISSP will raise my salary and ACSAC will not...

The problem I'm facing with the course I want is that it's the 7 day course instead of the 5 day course, and it's not local, so it costs $1500 more than the course most people around here take. But it's one of the only ways I can get a Sunday test date. Seriously. So that's why I've been looking into it.

If we get some serious budget money thrown at us, I might be able to swing both, but I'm just not counting on it. Last year I tried to get approval to go to ACSAC but couldn't because I was in limbo with respect to which group I belonged to. This year is slightly different, but we have to see where the money falls on the contract.

Anyway, speaking of ACSAC, I did get your email re: reviewing and I'm on it. Haven't done much, but I'm on it.

actually, just mentioned ACSAC to the boss... not saying it's going to happen (it's still not likely to), but he wasn't completely closed off to hearing about it...

Woo hoo!

I just learned today that our new corporate overlords will be paying for the fresh grad we hired in April to go to grad school starting in the fall. (Master's, not PhD.) Ok, this tells me that I can probably get approval for a conference or a Java course + certification or something like that. Must think on this.

I went back to my boss later and asked him if I imagined that conversation. "What do you mean?" he asked. "Well, it's just that I expected it to be a much longer, more drawn out, less satisfying conversation." "Okay, if that's what you want, we can do that." "Er, no, it's just that I wanted to make sure you weren't having one of your practical joke moments..." "Um, okay, I don't know what I'm supposed to say here."

Tee hee. So we talked a bit more and discussed the possible roadblocks to making it happen, but he told me how he was going to go about trying to make it happen for me, and I'm satisfied. I love my boss.
