why do people, including me, describe things as "beet red"? Beets are really closer to purple.

Doesn't it depend on the beet?

I've never seen a beet, or beet juice that's really actually red. It always looks purple. Maybe I haven't seen enough beets in my lifetime.

i think you're prejudiced. the correct terminolgoy is red for a beet. you can't say purple. you're definitely a racist. i wouldn't let my beets go to your house.

I usually only describe things as "beet red" if I'm describing a red that has a kind of purplish hue to it - I think of it as a deep magenta.

Because people are like sheep, generally they like to do what everyone else is doing.

I thought "beet red" was SUPPOSED to indicate a purplish type of red.

Hrm. People tell me I blush "red as a beet" (I blush REALLY easily and REALLY noticeably)... I'm definitely not purplish red...

Except that silver beet is green.

Interesting. I've never seen nor heard of silver beet.

One of my favourite vegetables.

I expect it's just called something different in the US.

(Glen runs off to google)

Yes. "Chard"

huh. Weird. One website told me that in Australia it is often incorrectly called spinach.

Right. Anyway. I use Swiss Chard in a lovely frittata recipe. I love the stuff. It's much heartier than spinach. Though I love spinach too.
