cat sneezes
Is it possible for a cat to have a cold? Charlie keeps sneezing. A lot. And he also keeps sounding like he's trying to blow his nose. And he looks kind of miserable. Maybe we should take him back to the vet? Getting him in the cat carrier last time cost Seth some skin and a lot of blood. I don't know if it's worth traumatizing Charlie for some sneezes. But sheesh, he can't be happy with all the sneezes. And I'm getting tired of having cat snot blown all over me.

As I understand it, cats don't get colds --- but they can get the flu, which often manifests with the same symptoms in cats.

You might want to ask your vet about it; flu can be dangerous for cats, but I don't know how often it is dangerous (vs. the equivalent of "rest and drink lots of fluids"). I'm under the (possibly false) impression that cats are only susceptible to influenza when their immune systems are weak for other reasons....

Hrm. I'm getting the impression that it's allergies. But it's so darned funny. I'm a bad person for thinking that, but it's TRUE!

Anyway, Seth's going to call the vet tomorrow and see what's up and whether we should bring him in again. He was just there a couple weeks for all his shots, but we'll take him back if we need to. We might need some metal armor for us to get him back in the cat carrier, but we'll see.

A cold is a possibility.

It's also possible for them to have allergies.

My cat, Max, sneezes occasionally...and it usually passes. And it's kind of cute. On the otherhand, I don't have cat snot flying everywhere.

Has the weather changed recently (I know it's still cold out there)?

I think Charlie is probably fine. How long has this been going on? I'd probably wait another week or so before thinking about taking him to the vet.

Re: A cold is a possibility.

yeah, he's not sneezing "occasionally" which is why I got worried. Last night he was sneezing CONSTANTLY. Though today he seems to have calmed down a little. And yes, the weather has changed a little. It got very warm for a few days and then turned cold again. So maybe that's it.

I don't really know how long it's been going on. It started Tuesday or Wednesday of last week, but Thurs-Sat we were in Philly for a funeral, and when we got back the sneezing was worse than when we left, but I don't know if it had been going on the whole time. Maybe he's allergic to us!

Re: A cold is a possibility.

Naw...I don't think he's allergic to you....

But, is it possible to call your vet and describe the symptoms and have them tell if it's something you should bring Charlie in for? A search on the internet might also bring up some info.

Poor Charlie. It's like when Max sneezes, I'm always amazed at how violent it is...eek!

Re: A cold is a possibility.

yeah, Seth is going to call the vet tomorrow. It's probably allergies, if anything, but still, it's strange. And I feel badly, because it's SO DARNED FUNNY! So I can't help laughing at him. ;)

Re: A cold is a possibility.

Thanks! You're a doll.

Re: A cold is a possibility.

Hey, you're a doll also.

Besides, dolls don't like to their cats sneeze -- even if it is funny.... =0)

err -- has your cat had all it's vaccinations?

not to alarm you, but early onset of feline leuk or FIV can appear as a "cold."

conversely, cat's can get a things which are like plain old cold or flu, and get over it, much as people do.

but if you haven't had your cat tested or vaccinated for feline leukemia or FIV, I'd get him/her/it to a vet asap.

he's had all his vaccinations. And he was just at the vet two weeks ago for his annual check up and shots.

I guess we'll call the vet tomorrow. The cats are Seth's area of expertise, not mine, but I know he's scrupulous about their shots.

well, best of wishes to you and the kitties. Having just spent the past few months dealing with seriously ill kitties, it ain't fun.

Oh, and cats do have allergies like people, too sometimes -- the cat could conceivably be allergic to something . . .

:-/

hope your kitty gets better soon.

I hope so too. If I'd had my way about it, we wouldn't have had pets, but I married into them (they're my furry little in-laws). Even so, I've grown a little attached to them, so I don't really want them suffering. My best bet right now is that he's allergic to something. Maybe we started using a new cleaning agent. Or maybe there's some mold or pollen or dust in the house that he's not used to. We'll see.

I'm sorry you had to deal with sick kitties. :( never fun.

Ew. Cat snots. My dog sneezes a lot, but not because he is sick. His breed does it for attention. How annoying!
estherchaya From: estherchaya Date: March 14th, 2004 10:14 am (UTC) (Link)
That's hysterical. I've never thought to sneeze for attention!

There's only one humane thing to do: put the cat down. No cat should suffer with the sniffles. Send Charlie off to Cat Heaven, where he will have 72 mice to chase around and all of his catnippy desires met.

And come to think of it, the other cat didn't look so healthy the last time we were over at your place. I'd knock off Pipsqueak, too, if I were you. Maybe the vet can give you a bulk discount!

You're a mean, mean man

You're definately a quart low on needed noogies. I suppose it could be worse...I could be mean enough to show you last week's Bob the Angry Flower cartoon. But I wouldn't be as mean to you as you to me, so I won't do that.
From: bodnej Date: March 14th, 2004 10:29 am (UTC) (Link)

This is the thanks I get

I'm just looking out for the best interests of your beloved pets, and I get threats upon my person.

Where's the love?

sethcohen From: sethcohen Date: March 14th, 2004 11:47 am (UTC) (Link)

Where's the love?

That's a good question. Where is the love for a man's pets? Certainly not radiating off of you.
estherchaya From: estherchaya Date: March 14th, 2004 10:14 am (UTC) (Link)
Seth told me you don't get any more presents this year for that comment. ;)
cellio From: cellio Date: March 14th, 2004 08:25 am (UTC) (Link)
I would call the vet and see what advice/information you can get over the phone. One of my cats occasionally seems to have a cold for a day or so (either that or very focused allergies), but we've never had something like this go on for an extended period.
estherchaya From: estherchaya Date: March 14th, 2004 10:15 am (UTC) (Link)
yeah, Seth's going to call the vet tomorrow. It's possible that there's just dust or mold or pollen or something in the air that's causing some interesting allergies for him. Obviously, if it goes on much longer we have to get it checked out.

huh?

Yes, he's calling the vet. He called ours yesterday, but they're closed through March 25. So he's calling another now.
