quickies
  • I did have a lovely and relaxing shabbos despite being somewhat rushed, a tiny bit stressed, and a lot distracted Friday afternoon.
  • Today has been relatively productive. This is a good thing. Whoo hoo. I wish I'd gotten a little more work done, but all in all, I got a large number of things done.
  • We went to lunch with Jason and Leah who are visiting from Los Angeles. It was great to see them and fantastic to finally see their little one, Max.
  • After lunch, I dropped Seth off at work, and then stopped at the women's gym I found nearby and joined. Hopefully I'll actually go. Now I have to go buy workout clothes. I own ONE pair of sweatpants. It's not going to be easy to go to the gym in a floor-length skirt.
  • After the gym, I came home, spent some time working, talked with my mother, with Bea and various assorted folks.
  • Then I prepared and cooked the standing rib roasts that I had intended to prepare Friday night but hadn't been able to do because of my bad car karma.
  • While the roasts were cooking, I did some more work on the journal and relaxed a teeney bit.
  • I hate the journal.
  • I took one of the roasts to Jon and Laura and chilled with the kid and watched a little of the football game.
  • Speaking of the football game, did I mention that New England is going to the SuperBowl? :-)
  • After leaving Jon and Laura's, I came home, did a little bit more work and talked to Bea for about the 7th time today. Then I went to pick Seth up from work.
  • While on my way to pick Seth up, I heard a version of "Everlasting Love" by U2. Pretty amusing. I think I must have it. That, and Cake's version of "I Will Survive". I will acquire these via iTunes, I believe. Yay for iTunes. Or I might just buy the albums. But I can use iTunes to research what I need to get. Yay for iTunes. :)
  • Having picked Seth up and arrived back at home, all the while continuing to prove that I have bad car karma right now, we are relaxing a bit. Seth is catching up on "Enterprise" and I'm procrastinating getting more journal work done. Sigh.
  • Tomorrow has more journal stuff in store for me, in addition to a trip to pick up my rental car for while my car is in the shop thanks to my continued bad car karma. Suffice it to say, I will be getting the extra insurance from Enterprise. Then after that, we'll go to a bookstore for a browse and then maybe back over to Jon and Laura's for more chillin' with the kid. Yeah, they're cool too, but really, I just go to hang out with the kid. :-D
  • That is all. Move along. Nothing to see here.

is itunes just for ipods/macs? do you have to pay?
sethcohen From: sethcohen Date: January 18th, 2004 09:27 pm (UTC) (Link)

Not as such

You can use it for anything, but the interface is virtually invisible when using an ipod/mac. Songs are $0.99 each.

Re: Not as such

They're cheaper than they used to be. I suspect that it's something that can be saved up for...or begged from family/friends/blackmailees...

how does itunes work? its only 99c a song or do you pay to be a member too? and do they have obscure 80's music and disney tunes?????

whats the story with your car?
estherchaya From: estherchaya Date: January 19th, 2004 07:12 am (UTC) (Link)
For more information, go to http://www.itunes.com
As far as I know you don't pay a membership fee, the software is free for download. It's 99 cents per song (it's slightly cheaper per song if you buy an entire album). I haven't looked too much into the selections on itunes with the exception of Cake's "I will Survive" and some Classical selections I've been looking for. But you can look around. As I understand it, iTunes doesn't yet have the selection that Napster and others have, but honestly, I've never looked elsewhere and probably never would have looked at iTunes if I hadn't gotten a Mac.

As for my car, I got into a minor car accident on Friday before Shabbos, making for a much more rushed Shabbos than I'd intended. There wasn't a lot of damage to the car, and both I and the other driver are both fine, thank G-d. But, the driver's side mirror on my car is now missing, and it's neither legal nor safe to drive a car in Maryland with no driver's side mirror. So I'm getting a rental car today, and my car is being towed to the body shop today, and hopefully it will all be fixed soon!

that's really crazy. did they find out what was the deal with the wheel bearing thing?
estherchaya From: estherchaya Date: January 19th, 2004 07:30 am (UTC) (Link)
oh yeah, I forgot about that. Must be all the bad car karma runs together after a while.
It was not, thank G-d, the wheel bearing. It was the rear brakes. So I replaced those last week (Tuesday) and then Friday my car went back out of commission with this accident! Yay for Karen! Gotta love it.

my goodness! have you ever thought about taking the bus?
estherchaya From: estherchaya Date: January 19th, 2004 07:44 am (UTC) (Link)
no kidding. I could metro to work, but it takes twice as long as driving. It'd be better for the environment and all...

The worst thing is that yesterday while driving my husband's car (which is far nicer than mine), several people nearly pulled into my lane without noticing that I was there (which is what happened Friday). Finally, while driving Seth home from work, someone almost did it again and I asked Seth what the heck I was doing to invite this sort of behaviour on... clearly I must be doing something wrong, right? Well, he said the only thing I was doing wrong was driving in Maryland. I was driving at a reasonable and safe speed, I wasn't swerving in and out of my lane. I wasn't braking and speeding up inconsistently... What else am I supposed to do? Blechers.

that is crazy!!! it's so true though about awful md drivers. i'm terrified to drive with asher in the car!!!!! so in your accident, it wasn't your fault?
estherchaya From: estherchaya Date: January 19th, 2004 07:57 am (UTC) (Link)
Oh no, it wasn't my fault at all. I was driving straight. The driver of the car in the lane to my left thought "gee, I'd like to be in the right lane now." She didn't see me. She pulled into my lane. Very little damage to either car except some cosmetic damage to the body of my car and my mirror being clipped off. The first thing the other driver said to me was "Clearly, this was entirely my fault." So that was good. Still, it is a nuisance.

i got into a fender bender accident THE DAY BEFORE MY WEDDING when merging onto 193 from 495. i was dropping stuff off at dan's condo. i accidentally bumped into someone at 5 mph. of course, i had to hit satan yuppie lady. we pull over and i get out of my car and look at both cars. i see NOTHING wrong with her car and there's a bunch of chipped paint on my car. no big deal. i care not about chipped paint. so iwas like "i'm not filing a claim. it's no big deal." and she's like "WELL! i dont understand how you could hit me!" and she's inspecting her car all over. i said "ma'am, i'm getting married tomorrow, i was clearly not paying as much attention as i should have been. i dont see anything wrong with your car or mine." of course she says "WELL i still need your information...I DONT KNOW HOW YOU HIT ME!?!" so i had to explain to her..."you stopped and i didn't see you stop. i was going under 5 mph....i was thinking about MY WEDDING!" then she looks at her car and starts rubbing her finger on some smudges and is like..."you scratched my car!" (achem...minivan....) and i licked my finger and whiped those "scratches" right off and said "looks fine to me." so i give her my info and then a few weeks later we get a call from my insurance who was CRACKING UP and is like "yeah this woman says her reverse motion sensor is broken. but her car doesnt have one. so we can take care of this. just thought we'd let you know."

some people are just LOOSERS. i seem to be a magnet for them.
estherchaya From: estherchaya Date: January 19th, 2004 08:19 am (UTC) (Link)
This woman was very nice, and very upset that she had done something wrong. Frankly, if it had only been cosmetic damage to the car, I would have driven off without bothering to file a claim because it just wasn't a big deal. But with the mirror damaged, I couldn't just leave it alone.

The week before my wedding, I had bronchitis and was on my way into work after going to the doctor and begging them to make me better before the wedding! I was rear-ended on my way into work. It wasn't my fault and the guy that hit me had damage to his van (company van), and I never filed a claim (though I probably should have...he hit me very hard and I ended up going to a chiropractor for the first time in my life, but again, not a huge deal). I had bronchitis and back pain at my wedding, but it wasn't the end of the world.

Yes, people can be losers and it's a shame. I was very proud of myself for not being at all upset on Friday (I'm still not upset...I'm just eager to have a car at my disposal again).

my parents call them a quako-practer....what's it like? does it really work?

Re: What else should you be doing?

I've become very fond of the horn in my car. Unfortunately, the horn in the Saturn isn't so easy to get to, especially if the steering wheel is turned at all. (two little buttons at the bottom of the steering wheel). But while driving Seth's car yesterday, I applied the horn liberally. ;-)

Cake or death...

Cake's "I will survive" is on Fashion Nugget, a most excellent collection of frosted songs. I have it, and can bring you the MP3's off of it for you to sample.

More info on the disc is here.

Good(?) news: I'll be in DC the week of Feb 2 - 6 for a training class, if y'all want to get together.

Re: Cake or death...

I plan (hopefully) to pick up Fashion Nugget today. Here's hoping. Otherwise, I'm all about you bringing me the MP3s

As for you being in DC... YAY! Come on by! Or we can meet you in DC. Do you need a place to stay?

I can't wait to see you! :)
