car woes

Um, argh?

So I'm driving into work this morning and all of a sudden my car starts shuddering.  The tires are squealing.  The car wouldn't move much (it felt like the emergency brake was on, but it wasn't).  Horrible noises are coming from my car.  And I was terrified because my car was effectively skidding.  Fabulous.  Cars are honking, there's not a damn thing I can do about it because... oh yeah, MY CAR WON'T MOVE YOU MORONS.  What the hell do they expect me to do, levitate?  Grr.

So eventually all of the pissy cars went around me and I was able to coax my car very noisily to the curb.  I'm looking at my tires, I don't see anything wrong (though two of them look like maybe they're a little low on air).  A very nice woman stops and asks me if I need to use her cell phone (she heard, but didn't see, what happened).  Fortunately, I had my cell phone with me, so I didn't need that, but I was still baffled.  I was just about to finish thanking her for her offer and call Seth, or Roadside Assistance, or Krispy Kreme (oh, well, maybe not them), when a very nice man stopped.  He saw what happened, he said, and he thought that probably what happened was that my wheel bearing (sp?) locked up.  Well, fabulous.  But!  He had the antidote.  He said to try putting the car in reverse and backing up a bit and THEN trying to go forward.  It worked!  But, he cautioned, make sure I check it out very soon.

Crap.  Crap.  Crap. Crap. Crap.

So I arrived at work 25 minutes late, but at least I didn't have to take the day off to have my car worked on.  Yet.

Current Mood: crappy crappy

tomorrow

We can probably take your car to Firestone tomorrow before the bris, and I can drop you at a Metro afterwards. Perhaps you can coordinate with Jo & Cary for getting a ride home (or back to Firestone) afterwards. It's not all bad.

yeah, I talked to my father, and he said he didn't think it was the wheel bearing. He thought it was the brakes, somehow.

yeah, I may need you to drop me at the metro with you tomorrow. I'm not sure. As for getting home, that's not a big deal. I can walk from Forest Glen, I just don't LIKE doing it. ;)

Oh. Crap. I just realized I need a car tomorrow evening. Crap.

I empathize

I empathize with your car woes very much. I own a 10 year old Corolla and she's beginning to show her age to the utmost. Figured I'd introduce myself this way b/c I've been reading your livejournal for quite a while. Hi, I'm Michelle, live on Long Island. Father was a Conservative Rabbi. Kind of strayed away from the religious scene, but find myself gravitating back towards it.
I really hope you have a better day tomorrow.

Re: I empathize

Thanks for commenting. How long is quite a while? I had no idea I had lurkers! I feel special. Where on Long Island? My grandparents lived 40 years in Great Neck (I spent summers there), and I started college at Stony Brook and have friends spread out all over the Island, so I know it pretty well.

Why don't you get a live journal account? it's free and then you could comment as you instead of as anonymous!

Re: I empathize

I do have a livejournal account, just started one two weeks ago as a matter of fact but I can't seem to remember my password and the system is unable to retrieve it for me right now. I know my username is "Liora7" after my favorite female Israeli name. I live in Hempstead, Long Island and have been there for roughly seven years. Before that, I lived in NYC. And before THAT, I was in college in Massachusetts - Clark University (small liberal arts school that not many people have heard of).
