already?

yeah. already. I think something shorted out. It's not the end of the world, and it's not like I'm the first person this has ever happened to. But it won't stay on without the power cord. Seeing as how it's a laptop, it's supposed to be able to run off the battery for a couple hours. It worked just fine for the first few days. Then Saturday night/Sunday morning, things sorta went kaplooey.

ooooh, I like that word. Kaplooey. It's fun to spell.

So soon? What happened?

I think something shorted out. It's a simple fix as I understand it. But it's way over my head, so I have to take it in. It's not the end of the world, and I'm not really bitter about it. Just sad.

you just got it!!!

Yes. You are correct. And I will not be the first person to buy a computer and have something not work the first time. Apple will either fix it or replace the computer. It's really not a big deal.

Have you tried resetting the power manager? That might help.

Honestly, you'd need to ask Jon. But yes, I think we tried this.

Have you tried feeding Jon brisket? That might help.

Dr. Computer explains for everyone...

Rather than reply to each thread, I'll just write this once, and hope that people check back in the post...

It looks like something shorted out in Karen's computer last week. It won't run off of battery power for more than about 30 seconds. I'd reset the power manager and the NVRAM (Karen had done it as well), and with the computer unable to draw power from the battery, it was resetting itself, anyway (the iBook has no backup battery on the motherboard).

Her iBook and mine use the same-sized battery, so we tried a battery swap last night. Her battery powered my computer just fine. My battery lasted about 30 seconds in her computer. I checked the AirPort card and memory card; they were well seated and looked like they were in good condition.

I was convinced that something was wrong hardware-wise when I saw what happened when it was running on battery power. Both the caps lock light and the num lock light turned ON for no reason, at about half-brightness. That's just wacky.

As a sanity check that it wasn't something Mac OS X-related, I ran Mac OS 9, and the exact same thing happened.

Unfortunately, I didn't ask Karen to bring over the Hardware Test CD that came with the computer; it might be able to find the actual problem. Have you had a chance to run it yet, Karen?

In any event, the best thing Karen can do is take Percy to the Apple Store's Genius Bar for a quick diagnosis and a probable trip back to the Mother Ship for repair.

Re: Dr. Computer explains for everyone...

Better now than in a few weeks, after she'd gotten more attached (and gotten it loaded up with all her data).

Re: Dr. Computer explains for everyone...

That's exactly what I thought about it. I'm not terribly stressed about it, but I would like for it to be working.

this happened to my thinkpad...they told me to remove teh battery, remove all power cords, hold the power button down for like 30 seconds, and it fixed the problem. reset something.

i dont know if thats just a thinkpad feature but i figured i woudl tell you...

yeah, we tried the equivalent to that. didn't work. I think some hardware actually shorted. Like I said, not the end of the world. Just inconvenient.
