Quickies
I'm seriously too lazy to do a real update, which is a shame, because I've got some decent things to update about. Maybe after I finish this, I'll get around to it.
  • Most of you know that I ordered, and received, a new iBook. I love it. LOVE, LOVE, LOVE it. For all of you out there thumbing your nose at me for being a mac person... ppppppbbbbbtttttt!!!!!!
  • I just downloaded iJournal as my LJ client. This is my first experiment with this client. So far I like it a lot better than the client I had for Windows.
  • Last Sunday (the 7th) we had our neighbors over for dinner. For the first time. Ever. Seth has lived in this house over three years. We've been married for over a year. And never, not once, have we had our neighbors over for dinner. Not that they've had us over to their houses either. But, to be fair, we wouldn't have eaten at our neighbors' houses anyway, since they don't keep kosher. But still, I feel rotten that we haven't had them over. Anyway, a good time was had by all, and I hope to make a full and complete LJ entry about this later.
  • bluejeanjexy ROCKS. She sent me floating wicks and they were exactly the brand I wanted. mamadeb also ROCKS for offering to send me more! I've got the greatest buddies. Seriously. People should be jealous of just how cool my friends are.
  • Did I mention how much I love, love, love, love, love my iBook?
  • did I ever write an entry about Turkey Day? Oh well. If I didn't, the basic synopsis is: we had my mother, Seth's mother, and Seth's brother over. Only one anxiety attack. A record, perhaps.
  • beaniekins sent me a pee mail today. I cannot believe someone wasted creative energy to make this site. It's SICK! Someone even drew GEORGE WASHINGTON in the snow!
  • I still haven't named my iBook. It's either Percy or iBert. I can't decide.
  • We had a fairly quiet Shabbos. Friday night we had psujedi, caryabend, and a co-worker of mine over for dinner. It was the first time my co-worker has joined us for shabbos dinner, so that was interesting. She blended in rather well, I thought, though she started out awfully quiet, and I was concerned that she wasn't comfortable. I think she ended up feeling just fine.
  • Long story, but I missed lighting candles Friday. I think this may mean adding a candle to my shabbos candles for the rest of my life, but I'm waiting to hear back from my rabbi. G-d willing, I'll be adding more candles in the future (for my future children) anyway, so I'm not stressed about this. It was all in the name of a mitzvah.
  • Today Seth slept much of the day, which is good because I think he really needed it. Neither of us made it to shul because of this. I briefly considered going but I stepped outside to test the temperature and it was frigid, so I didn't go. It would have been very difficult for me to breath in such cold weather and, well, I'm lazy. I davened here, then fell asleep for a bit. When Seth woke up I felt refreshed, but I was still glad I was home.
  • I went shopping in search of a NON non-stick wok today. There appear to be none to be found. I bought a non-stick one grudgingly. I will return it if I can find a NON nonstick one.
  • Just what IS the opposite of non-stick anyway? Sticky? That just doesn't seem to convey the right thing. Non-coated would work, I guess.
  • Oh yeah, my iBook is the greatest
  • I'm planning to spend a good deal of tomorrow in Baltimore. Bea and I are going to do some things, play with my new computer, maybe watch a movie, do some learning, etc. It will be very good for me to do some learning. I've been a big slacker. I believe my birthday hachlatah will be to learn more regularly. Hah. That was my resolution LAST year. But this year, before my birthday rolls around, I will have a topic, a schedule and a plan in place. No more of last year's waffling!
  • Seth and I are both having weird job stuff going on. I won't write about any of that in a public entry. My job, fortunately does seem to be working itself out and I'm far happier than I was several months ago. But there's still sometimes some weirdness. Seth's weirdness boils down to schedules. I'll save that for later.
  • The one thing I will say about Seth's schedule is that he's working NIGHTS on the 24th and 25th. Normally I wouldn't have a problem with this. What I have a problem with is the way it came about. Look for a friends only journal sometime when it ISN'T a quarter to three in the morning.
  • Oh, and regarding my job... I will say that I've been getting some major kudos lately. And I've definitely earned it. Yay for me!
  • We are having a ✡Chanukah party on the 25th. Seth may, or may not, be conscious for it. I wouldn't have scheduled it if we'd known he was working. But I see no reason to cancel it at this point. I am making Chinese food. I hope. Hence, the need for the wok.
  • I definitely think I like this LJ client.
  • Coolest thing so far about this LJ client? I can make this symbol without so many horrible hoops to jump through: ¢. Hah! ¢¢¢¢ I can do it as many times as I want! And all with the click of a button! For my most loyal readers (yeah, like I have any of those!), you'll remember that this was something that seriously annoyed me in the past...not being able to make the cents symbol. Now I can!! And I can also make: £, ₤, ₪, ₠, ₦, ฿, and others! Yay for me.
  • another nifty mac thing is that I can write in Hebrew on my IMs. How cool is that? of course, I don't speak Hebrew. But that's not the point. I still think it's cool. :)
Well, that's it for now. I think I need to head off to bed shortly. I hope everyone is well. More later.

Current Mood: tired tired

The problem with linking my name is that my eyes jumped automatically to it. I was like, "La-di-da, Karen's life, oh, me!!" I have a huge ego.

Try an iron skillet, not exactly the same shape, but it'll do the trick.

That seriously made me laugh out loud!

True. I've never made Chinese Food. And I'm really not into typical stir fry dishes, so the whole wok thing is slightly overkill. But if I can find a wok at a reasonable cost that meets my criteria, I'll get it. Seth likes stir fry.

I, personally, would get the nonstick wok (well, I already got it in case all else fails, but I'll return it if something better turns up), except that Seth wanted a non-non-stick one, and I confirmed with his brother (who is a chef) that non-non-stick is the way to go.

I've got 5 boxes of wicks for ya.

Yes, you will more than likely have to light an extra candle from now on.

If you have a Chinatown, go there to find your non non-stick wok. they're also WAY cheaper there. I bought mine in NYC's Chinatown district and I LOVE it.

Will I get to see you in two weeks?
estherchaya From: estherchaya Date: December 14th, 2003 06:13 am (UTC) (Link)
YES! YAY FOR YOU! More wicks! I really didn't want to start lighting with oil unless I was fairly certain I'd have a sufficient supply, for once I go to oil...I shouldn't go back to candles. So now I can safely say I'm switching to oil!! Yeah baby! :-D

And yes, you're seeing me in two weeks. email me for my phone number and we'll figure something out. email is ksnell@livejournal.com.

Yes, I actually work near Chinatown in DC, so maybe I'll take a look there for a wok. That should prove to be fun, no? Thanks for the suggestion!

Yep. I got workd from my rabbi last night. An extra candle it is. Oh well. My shabbos candles will burn brighter than ever, then.

missing candle lighting

I still feel bad that you missed candle lighting on my account.

Re: missing candle lighting

Do not feel bad. I missed it on your wife's account and the world did not come tumbling down. I traded one mitzvah for another. You know I'd do just about anything for you guys so quit feeling bad. If you're going to feel bad about that, then I'm going to feel bad about all the times I woke you up at 3 in the morning when you were in collage because I was having some sort of teenaged melodrama.

Have you tried xjournal? That's a cool client. I used to use iJournal, but I switched.
estherchaya From: estherchaya Date: December 14th, 2003 06:18 am (UTC) (Link)
why did you switch? No, I haven't tried it. I seriously love iJournal, so there'd have to be a compelling reason for me to switch. I almost never used the windows LJ client because it sucked. But this I love!
drmellow From: drmellow Date: December 14th, 2003 06:25 am (UTC) (Link)
Development of iJounal had stalled -- there was beginning to be some infighting among the developers as to the direction of the client. I looked at what else was out there and found xjournal and was greatly impressed by it. I love it's history functionality. And the way you can manage friends lists. It also makes it easy to switch from one journal to another.

All in all, I find it simply overally a much better product.
estherchaya From: estherchaya Date: December 14th, 2003 06:31 am (UTC) (Link)

well, well, well...

frankly, iJournal is meeting me needs, including switching from one journal to another. Though I guess the friends-list management dealy is cool. anyway, I HAVE to download xJournal now because the location listed on the community info page is Greenock, Scotland!! Whoo hoo!!! Yay for Scots! Of course xJournal is cooler! It's a kilt wearing LJ client!

Re: well, well, well...

Oh yeah -- fraserspeirs, the developer of xjournal is Scottish.

i want an ibook but my father said he'd disown me if i ever got a mac.
estherchaya From: estherchaya Date: December 15th, 2003 09:27 am (UTC) (Link)
ahem. That's very silly. That would only make sense if your father were Bill Gates. I bought my last mac in 1994 (which I kept until 1997)... Macs have changed a LOT since then.

my father works for ibm :(
estherchaya From: estherchaya Date: December 15th, 2003 07:57 pm (UTC) (Link)
I can see that.
My exboyfriend worked for IBM, then Lotus (which got bought out by IBM while he was there) and even HE has macs. ;)

I'm thinking of having a Chanukah gathering myself but on the evening of the 20th. I wanted to talk to you about it...I may try to give you a call this evening.
estherchaya From: estherchaya Date: December 14th, 2003 04:22 pm (UTC) (Link)
We'll be home this evening. Call anytime.
estherchaya From: estherchaya Date: December 15th, 2003 09:26 am (UTC) (Link)
You didn't call!

Why did you want to talk to us about it? If it is in regards to shabbos times... shabbos probably ends around 5:30 that day.
mscongeniality From: mscongeniality Date: December 15th, 2003 09:43 am (UTC) (Link)
Sorry, this was very much not a good weekend. (See my journal for details)

And it wasn't Shabbos issues it was feeding you issues - which was why I wanted to talk directly.
estherchaya From: estherchaya Date: December 15th, 2003 09:49 am (UTC) (Link)
Feeding us is not an issue. We know well enough to bring our own food when necessary. But you can give me a call at work if you'd like. email me karen_cohen@comcast.net if you don't know the number.
