Heredity

Nicholas Hughes, the son of poet Sylvia Plath, has killed himself, 46 years after his mother committed suicide and almost 40 years to the day after his stepmother, Assia Wevill, did the same. He was 47.

I find this news to be so profoundly sad...

I saw that. I find it sad also and he was so young when they both died.

That's it. I'm hiding under a blanket until this is all over.

I take offense to the title heading "heredity".

Suicide is not hereditary. It does not "run in families"...
But DEPRESSION does... and it is treatable and manageable.

I say this as someone who has had a family member commit suicide, and has had other family members do so as well (but that happened before I remember it or before I was alive).

If you are depressed, please SEEK help. Suicide is NEVER an answer.

You can take as much offense as you want, but every article I've read about his tragic death has underlined the fact that he suffered from severe depression. As did his mother.

I'll entitle my posts anything I please, and do remember that you are the one that chose to read my post.

(I will note now that I see WHO you are... I hadn't recognized you before and thought you were just someone random before who didn't have any connection to me at all... that I do respect your point - and I say this as a person whose mother attempted suicide at least four times in my lifetime and several times before that. There's more history there, but not for a publicly available post.)

And not to worry. I don't think I'm particularly depressed. Certainly not suicidal.

Hrm. Was just reading about Sylvia Plath, her husband, his mistress, etc. earlier today.

The first two appear as characters in a book I'm reading.

How sad. I guess because I always hoped that the kids would be alright. It reminds me of when Jeff Buckley died. His father had died when he was very very young and he ended up also dying in his 20s. Strange and sad at the same time.
