Why in heaven's name is beach volleyball an olympic sport?  And why am I so strangely entranced by it?  And why on earth is it worthy of PRIME TIME COVERAGE?

um.... pretty, fit, females w/ bouncing boobies means more viewers which means networks can demand more $$ from sponsers? OK maybe not "worthy" but it's no mystery to me why it's on in prime time. :-)

Currently, MEN'S beach volleyball is on. Not Women's. And funny you should say it that way, because when I asked Seth why beach volleyball is worthy of prime time olympic coverage, he said, "I can't tell you about MEN'S olympic beach volleyball, only women's..."

I still think this is ridiculous.

Why is target shooting with rifles an olympic sport?

I have to admit that I've been won over by beach volleyball. It's enough of a variation on standard volleyball and the variable surface of the sand has got to make it a pain to get anywhere fast. As for why it's on prime time, that's easy. It's because the US is almost guaranteed to win the gold medals in both the men's and women's matchups.

I don't know why target shooting with rifles is an olympic sport. I think it's all a bit ridiculous, to be honest.

And whatever, I'm all for thinking beach volleyball is cool. But an olympic sport? Come ON! Where do we draw the line?

It's because the US is almost guaranteed to win the gold medals in both the men's and women's matchups.

"Almost guaranteed" gold in both?

What odds correspond to "almost guranteed", I wonder? Obviously it implies that the chance of any other outcome is quite small. This suggests odds of say "9-1 on" is not short enough (a 90% chance is hardly "almost guaranteed" - a full 10% chance of something else happening is not that small).

I'd happily take a few dollars of that action. Heck, I'd take it at 3-1 on.
Mmm. Sorry. - (Anonymous) - Expand

Do you really have to ask why a sport that involves women in bikinis is on prime time?

Do you really have to ask?

As to why you are entranced by it - people rubberneck at train wrecks, too.

No, but seriously, it was MEN'S beach volleyball!

why do the men get full coverage and the women wear bikinis? come on, bikinis? is that sports gear in this day and age?

rifling goes back decades, though, and there are tons of shooting medals.

They spent the entire women's match yesterday discussing the female player who's wedding ring flew off during competition, the metal detectors used for the search for said ring, how her husband the professional volleyball player had never lost his ring, what she gave the nice Chinese volunteer who found the ring, etc. Which just goes to show, the announcers don't think it's much of an Olympic Sport either.

yeah, then the next night the announcer actually asked, "So what makes a woman decide which color tape to use?" because two of the women playing each had an injury they had taped up... one had black tape, one had blue tape. Who the frick CARES what color tape they used, and WHAT? What do you MEAN what makes them decide which color tape to use? This isn't rocket science! OMG. Clearly there's not much to talk about in the actual "sport".

It gets prime time coverage because there are Americans who are good at it. This is the same reason it became an Plympic sport in the first place.

I see that as a reason it gets prime time coverage, but not why it became an olympic sport. The US isn't the only country that has a say in which sports become olympic sports.

Watching the Olympics, you'd think the only sports were beach volleyball, gymnastics, and swimming. I don't understand why a more broad survey of the competitions cannot be shown.
Rifle sports seem fine to me, as many of the purer sports have to do with survival or combat skills. Beach volleyball won't save your life.
I am actually surprised fencing hasn't been shown. Fencing typically has not been shown, but the American women do very well now in sabre, not my favorite weapon but a weapon that could be exciting to an audience unfamiliar with fencing, what with the whipping and all. But no, show boring, slow-paced water polo instead, go right ahead.

You can see a lot of the other sports if you have cable and watch during the day, you just can't watch those during prime time on NBC.

I don't have any interest in watching either water polo OR fencing, to be honest.
