Shabbos Notes:
First, I should mention that my challah? Delicious. I mean seriously delicious. SO. YUMMY.
Anyway, more notes:
  • Dinner ended up much better and fuller than I'd anticipated. We started with slices of canteloupe, instead of my usual soup and/or fish. This was a nice summer alternative, though I did get a blistering headache from it. Oh well.
  • While I was pulling the main courses together, people enjoyed the yummilicious challah with hummus and magid's idea for a simple black bean dip (black beans and salsa blended in a food processor or blender) topped with chopped yellow tomatoes. I was skeptical about the black bean dip as I am greatly affected by the texture of most foods. But it turned out to be delightfully refreshing. Yum. (though, I'll admit it still looked gross)
  • The main course itself was just great. Corned beef, cabbage, and mashed potatoes. The corned beef was perfectly moist. The cabbage, which I left in the hot water when shabbos started (no flame, of course) was perfect and still hot, and the potatoes did not turn to soup, as they often do when I keep them warm in the oven between candlelighting and sitting down to dinner. Everything was simple, but very tasty.
  • Dessert was generously provided by leahmiriam who has a strange fascination with making baked goods for other people even if they aren't things she can or will eat. She provided a tantalizing pecan pie, for which my husband suggested divorcing me and marrying her. I must, of course, express my displeasure at this sentiment, since I have made quite a number of pecan pies for my dear husband. So there.
  • All in all, dinner was pleasant, tasty, and not overwhelming, which was nice. We had the Abensons and the Felds over, which was great, though incredibly strange to fit at one table and not have to bring down one of the spare tables! Somehow, despite the simplicity and the short guest list, my kitchen STILL ended up an absolute disaster. Such is life. It will slowly but surely resolve itself, of course.


Saturday was very, very lazy. I'm okay with this.

Your challah was outstanding. I ate the last piece today and it was just as excellent as it was on Friday night. One of the reasons I like to bake for you (and you are gracious in accepting because I know my stuff doesn't always taste great, which is weird since I was an assistant to a pastry chef in another life) is that it allows me to be a part of your shabbos since we can't spend it together. That, and I know after all that wonderful cooking you do, dessert ends up being fruit, which is awesome, but it's nice to have cake now and again. Seth was just kidding, he was trying to pay me a compliment and was excited about the pie. Husbands say silly things...you've met mine, right?

Thanks! I was pretty proud of it.

And do not be ridiculous about the baking... you bake wonderful things. The pie was rich and scrumptious. After we finish the basement and get a guest room again, we can have you over for shabbos. How's that?

allergic? No. But it does cause me to writhe in pain from the inevitable migraine. Honeydew too, but to a far lesser extent. Fact is, I like them both and I continue to eat them in moderation.
