Hooray for Kosher Cabot!
I've been very frustrated that Cabot cheese is Tablet-K certified, but products that cabot cheese is used in is OU certified. I don't eat Tablet-K cheese. I do eat OU cheese. I've been writing to Cabot for about six months now trying to convince them that there IS marketability if they certified their whole cheese line through the OU. Apparently I wasn't the only one.

(Note: this cheese is NOT cholov yisroel)

I received this email on a list recently:
The Cabot Creamery of Cabot, Vermont, producers of award-winning cheddar,
now offer an OU certified sharp cheddar. This is a marketing test which is
currently available through their web site, and is their first OU certified
hard cheese. It’s a bit more expensive than the locally available kosher
cheddars, but its flavor is far superior to that of Miller’s and HaOlam (my
shipment came today, so that’s my opinion).

http://store.cabotcheese.com/

Here’s what Cabot says:

OU Kosher Sharp Cheddar
All of the cheeses in our online store (except for Smoky Bacon Cheddar) are
already certified kosher by Tablet-K and certified halal by the Islamic Food
and Nutrition Council of America (IFANCA). However, we have received many
consumer inquiries about providing OU-certified cheddar, so we are
conducting this market test. If successful, we will make this product a
permanent addition to our web shopping selection. In the future, we may even
explore making it available through your local supermarket.

I obtained the following information from Cabot with regards to how long this market test will be run before they decide whether to continue supporting the product:

As you know, the OU Sharp Cheddar is now exclusively sold only through our online shopping website. I am told that this test will be extended through Passover, while the supply lasts. At that time, Cabot will make their decision whether the sales merrit them releasing it for distribution to our retail partners. The quicker the cheese is sold the better chances for release at a future date. It would be great if the cheese could be released during the week of Shavuot. We will have to wait and see.

So PLEASE!!! Go buy this product! :)
(though I will say you'll want to get in on it with friends because the shipping is quite prohibitive.)

Current Mood: ecstatic ecstatic

(1) How did you get the new mood icons? I've been wanting to do that for a while, but I don't have the artistic ability to design the set I want.

(2) I do read Kashrus, so I'm familiar with the different heckshers. Why don't you trust Tablet-K?

My husband did it as a surprise for me. I think allahsulu made the actual icon sized pictures, but Seth created the new mood theme thingy.

I was only slightly annoyed that he got rid of my penguins without asking me. Now I'm kind of getting used to my little guy.

as for the second question, I'm cutting and pasting from WJ:
The fact is that in the case of Cabot Cheese, it's probably fine, but because the agency is not always considered reliable, sometimes it's better to steer away from all of their products (for maris ayin if nothing else) instead of researching which 3 products are acceptable.

Tablet-K, I believe but please don't hold me to this because I could be mixing them up, is sometimes not as cautious with oil and fruit juice as other agencies are. Triangle-K has the same problem. There are actually a fair number of Triangle-K products that are fine, but there are so many that aren't that it's difficult to keep track.

Thanks for the explanation. I like your new mood icons, but wish they were smaller (size them down 50%). One of these days, I'd like a set of mood icons that are the california highway shield with a face expressing the various modes (i.e., turn the shield into a cartoon character).
estherchaya From: estherchaya Date: March 17th, 2005 06:55 pm (UTC) (Link)
I wish they were smaller too. But I'm not sure how he did it and I'm not going to mess with it. Frankly, I'll probably keep them for a couple weeks and then go back to my penguins. I sort of miss my penguins.
allah_sulu From: allah_sulu Date: March 17th, 2005 07:10 pm (UTC) (Link)
I could reduce them further. But I think we need to make more of them first.
allah_sulu From: allah_sulu Date: March 17th, 2005 07:11 pm (UTC) (Link)
That could be done easily enough. Get the smiley-faced mood theme, and paste those facial expressions over the rt-1 shield.
cahwyguy From: cahwyguy Date: March 17th, 2005 07:13 pm (UTC) (Link)
I've tried, but I'm not that artistic, nor do I have enough time to figure out how to do it and how to install it.

Something like this?

cahwyguy From: cahwyguy Date: March 17th, 2005 07:35 pm (UTC) (Link)
Close. The green would need to be darker, and I'd just get rid of the one in the background (the shape of the shield is iconic enough for something that small). But otherwise, yes. I'd imagine the process of doing them all is tedious.

cahwyguy From: cahwyguy Date: March 17th, 2005 07:52 pm (UTC) (Link)
Right color on the background, wrong on the face. But I'm picky (which I why I didn't make up the set m'self). But you're inspiriting me, so let me see what I can do...
allah_sulu From: allah_sulu Date: March 17th, 2005 07:55 pm (UTC) (Link)
I switched to white on the face so that (1) I could leave the green dark, and (2) preserve the original white-on-green color scheme.

Feel free to grab the one I did and modify it, if you'd rather do that than start from scratch.
cahwyguy From: cahwyguy Date: March 17th, 2005 07:58 pm (UTC) (Link)
OK. What I'd like is the background of the shield you've got, with the face being along the lines of the Tender Lumpings, with the appropriate animations. Most of them would be the dark green, with a few exceptions: cold would be more of a blue-green with ice; hot would be a reddish-green; embarassed would be blushing, you get the idea.

As I said... a lot of work, which is why I never bothered.
allah_sulu From: allah_sulu Date: March 17th, 2005 08:06 pm (UTC) (Link)
That was the mood theme I started with...
     ⇒
...but I had to tweak it in a couple of ways. The first time, I darkened it, and the second time, I changed it to white. In both cases, I had to shrink the face down a bit to fit into the shield, since the 30x30 size you specified for the shield is smaller than that mood theme's face size. To use the faces on that mood theme unaltered, you'll most likely have to increase the size of the shield a bit and/or lighten the green a bit.

You people have way too much time on your hands.
allah_sulu From: allah_sulu Date: March 17th, 2005 08:15 pm (UTC) (Link)
I wish I had more time, actually. One of my friends was chiding me for not taking today off from work, and spending the whole day in an Irish bar (as he does every year, and I've done a couple of times with him). Unfortunately, I do have some work to do.

Icons take me very little time to whip up, because I've done so many of them over the last few years...
allah_sulu From: allah_sulu Date: March 17th, 2005 09:56 pm (UTC) (Link)
You don't have to do them all at once. I made about 16 mood icons last year when I created my theme, and added 10 more this month.
cahwyguy From: cahwyguy Date: March 17th, 2005 07:14 pm (UTC) (Link)
I'll note that I'd also want them small is, probably nothing larger than 30x30.

I second that Squeeeee!
bluejeanjexy From: bluejeanjexy Date: March 17th, 2005 07:51 pm (UTC) (Link)
That's so not the icon I meant to put there.
This on is.
estherchaya From: estherchaya Date: March 17th, 2005 08:00 pm (UTC) (Link)
but it's not cholov yisroel. I'll work on that for you, since my letter writing seems to have helped!

We eat OU-D
estherchaya From: estherchaya Date: March 17th, 2005 08:09 pm (UTC) (Link)
You do? YAY FOR YOU!!! This is OU-D!
bluejeanjexy From: bluejeanjexy Date: March 17th, 2005 08:14 pm (UTC) (Link)
So are M&Ms and starbucks!
estherchaya From: estherchaya Date: March 17th, 2005 08:14 pm (UTC) (Link)
Oh. Duh. That's right. That should have occurred to me when I was trying to figure out if you kept CY.
ichur72 From: ichur72 Date: March 17th, 2005 08:50 pm (UTC) (Link)
It's exciting. I've missed sharp cheddar. Now if I can just get this product in Atlanta ...
estherchaya From: estherchaya Date: March 17th, 2005 08:53 pm (UTC) (Link)
The only place you can get it at all right now is online. I highly recommend going in with a bunch of people so that you offset the shipping cost somewhat.
ichur72 From: ichur72 Date: March 17th, 2005 09:04 pm (UTC) (Link)
Or maybe I can try to drum up support among friends and then we can petition the local stores? Hmmmm. Cheeeeeeese.
estherchaya From: estherchaya Date: March 17th, 2005 09:13 pm (UTC) (Link)
no, that's not it. They're ONLY doing a test market online right now. They'll do it through Pesach and then decide whether to make it a permanent part of their web catalogue and start exploring getting it into stores.

The way to ensure that they support continued production of the cheese is to order it. They only made one vat this time around for the test market. They'll be basing their decision, in part, on how fast that vat sells off. I don't know how many 10oz bars of cheeze a vat makes, though.
ichur72 From: ichur72 Date: March 17th, 2005 10:14 pm (UTC) (Link)
Sigh. That's what I get for getting so excited I didn't read all the way through. Time to poll friends to see whether they're interested, I guess.
ichur72 From: ichur72 Date: March 18th, 2005 03:04 am (UTC) (Link)
I love my husband -- the first thing he said to me at dinner tonight had to do with this cheese and whether he should buy me some. I got excited all over again (cheeeeeeese!), and then we began to mull over the question of who might be willing to make a joint order with us.
bluejeanjexy From: bluejeanjexy Date: March 17th, 2005 07:53 pm (UTC) (Link)
I dig the mood theme. Am I an egotist because I have always wanted a theme that's me making all the appropriate faces?
allah_sulu From: allah_sulu Date: March 17th, 2005 07:56 pm (UTC) (Link)
Get a digital camera and take a lot of face shots.
estherchaya From: estherchaya Date: March 17th, 2005 08:01 pm (UTC) (Link)
I think that's funny. :)
