Kabbalat Shabbat and Maariv
Jason asked me to learn to lead Kabbalat Shabbat and Ma'ariv. I have mixed feelings. He gave me a CD that he put together with the service, which is definitely helpful, and I'm sure I'm capable of doing it.

We'll see...

leading services

Hey, you can do it! I was pretty apprehensive when they asked me to do this, and it came out ok. For what that's worth. :-)

Re: leading services

I'm sure I can do it. I'm just not sure I won't make a fool of myself.

I have other issues with it too. But since I'm willing to read torah and haftorah, I should just get over it. :)

Thanks for your encouragement!

Jason has a great CD with the service on it and I have no doubt I can get Kabbalat Shabbat under my belt pretty quickly. Ma'ariv I think will take me a little longer, but not too much longer.

You said it, not I. :-) (But seriously, I was wondering if the gender issues were making you uncomfortable, except, as you say, you do read torah and haftorah, so...)

Ma'ariv I think will take me a little longer, but not too much longer.

I presume that you know most of the service already (as a participant, I mean), and learning it as a leader mostly involves polish, not new material. Is that about right?

Re: leading services

Well, I love learning the torah and haftorah trope. I still haven't entirely reconciled myself to getting up on the bimah and reading in front of the congregation. You'll note that I have no problems with other women doing it, I just have problems reconciling myself with doing it. I'm a weirdo that way.

I do know most of the service already as a participant. My concern is speed. I read very quickly if I'm reading to myself. But if I'm reading out loud, I read very slowly as I try to pronounce things far more accurately. So it's a matter of practice, practice, practice.

So I'll get it eventually. I know I can do it. I'm just a bit intimidated for the moment.
