Yay for great days!
This morning I woke up around 7:15ish, but decided to laze in bed a little bit with a book since it was Sunday and I had no place to go just yet. I must have fallen back to sleep, because a few minutes before 8, Leila woke me up by licking my face. It's a little disconcerting to wake up to the sight of enormous, black nostrils, two beady eyes, and an enormous tongue. Heh.

Anyway, I read for a while over there and played with the puppy. Eventually, I changed out of my pajamas and headed over to Jim and Karynya's for a BBQ-thingy. More important than BBQ, there was poker. I've never actually played poker, save a couple drunken games of Baseball (which I have no idea how to play). But I am positively fascinated by the World Series of Poker and other professional poker tournaments. I don't actually know much about poker, but I'm spell-bound by it. Anyway, it turns out that I'm not a fabulous poker player, but I'm not half bad either. I did lose $10 in one hand at one point. But there were several hands where I won close to that much. (this was nickel and dime poker, so it was sorta significant). Turns out I'm quite the little poker addict. But I still came out ahead. I'll stick my winnings in the tzedeka box* and put the rest back into our change jar for next time. And yes, there will be a next time.

I got a few really great pictures which I'll post eventually. I can't post any for a while because we can't find the cable for our camera do transfer the pictures over to the computer (er, it's certainly in one of the boxes somewhere, but who knows how long that will take to surface). Theoretically, there's a way to just put the memory card in the slot on the printer, but I'm not really certain how to do that either. So we'll have to figure something out. Or maybe just buy another cable. Duh.

Anyway, that's the good. Here's the bad...

I still can't find my stupid cell phone. It has been MIA for about 2 weeks now, so I'm thinking the only way to find it is to buy a new one. Problem with that is that I've TRIED to buy a new phone a couple of times. Couldn't get anyone to help me in the actual Verizon store. Tried online (even though I detest ordering cell phones online). Two days after I sent in my order online, I got an email saying that they couldn't (rather, wouldn't) process my order because I was 11 days away from being able to get the promotional price for the stupid phone. You know, at this point I don't give a crap. I need a stupid phone!!! Is it so much to ask? Plus, their email to me had such phenomenally bad grammar that I wasn't entirely certain that I was 11 days away from getting the promotional price. So I called and asked the representative if Verizon's computers were stupid or just poor grammaticians (is that even a word?). He didn't get it, but it turned out that it was just another case of lousy grammar. And I begged the man to TAKE MY MONEY in exchange for a shiny, new phone. And his response? "Oh, don't worry ma'am. No money has exchanged hands. We haven't taken anything from you."

GAH!

So I hung up on him. Now I'm trying to decide whether to fight with verizon in person or if I should just switch carriers. Problem is that Verizon really has the best coverage for what we need. Sigh.

Anyway, I will be getting a new phone this week because I'm driving down to Richmond next Sunday to see fheyd and yermie and I will not be doing so sans cell phone. So there.

*Tzedeka means charity. A tzedeka box is a box in which you put money that is earmarked for charity. Usually at a minimum, a woman puts some coins (or a couple dollars or whatever) in the tzedeka box (also called a pushke) before lighting candles Friday night. When the box is full, the family counts up the money and chooses a charity to donate the money to. Typically we don't burden the charity with all the coins; we just write a check for an appropriate amount. Figured I'd put that last bit out there before one of you smart-aleks asked how we sent all those coins through the mail.

Cell phone stores are evil places. I think every time I've been in one of those places, I've walked out with my jaw clenched and my eyes bulging. I always managed to walk in when there was only one or two salesman on duty and at least three customers in front of me, all of which were buying new cell phone plans (a process which takes forever). So I would end up waiting for more than half an hour to buy additional minutes for my phone (a process which takes at most 5 minutes). Luckily, Walt handles this now. (Thank G-d for my husband, in this and many other ways).

The last time I went into the Verizon store, the wait was an hour and a half. And frankly, given the number of people in the store, I would think it would be even longer...and it probably would have been if they hadn't been closing. I would have sucked it up and waited the hour and a half (believe it or not) except that they wouldn't have waited on me. They were going to close the store in an hour, so anyone left in the store with their "hour and a half" wait would have been kicked out. Stupid, stupid people.

Normally Seth deals with all this stuff for me, but since I wanted to pick out a new phone it seemed to make sense for me to go myself. I'm beginning to have second thoughts about that.

I could, except that I don't like picking out phones online. Therefore, I have to be in the store anyway.

Get a prepaid disposable cellphone? Would that suffice for a) your trip to Richmond, b) triggering the old phone to reveal itself?

I thought about it, and I would have done that if I hadn't been able to get Verizon to cough up a phone today. My phone needed replacing anyway; it's just that the phone numbers in it weren't necessarily anywhere else. Sigh.

At any rate, a good thought. Thanks.
